A Country Mile

Verse 1

Down the road and around the bend
This story’s been told now and then
There’s an old farm where the grass still grows
Near a small town that that no one knows

Farmer gets a loan for his flatbed Ford
Barely makes a living for his room and board
Working on the farm doesn’t always pay
Growing and baling another man’s hay

Chorus
Another day past another day won
Bale that hay ton by ton
Tractor rolls on for a country mile
Riding up to heaven with the sky’s on fire, sky’s on fire

Verse 2

Settle on down and buy some land
Bankers with a grudge don’t give a damn
Cross the Rio Grande to the other side
North to Texas where it’s far and wide

Looking for a farm nearly dead and gone
Bring it back to life so it sings his song
The blood from his hands is in the land
Living the life of a farming man

Chorus followed by Solo

Verse 3

The ghost of the buffalo haunts his place
The Indian voices still leave a trace
He’ll care for the land and pass it on
When the years go by till he’s dead and gone

The beauty of the wind and stars at night
Never get to sleep on a moonlit night
Down the road and around the bend
This story’s been told now and then

Chorus
